As a kid, did you ever wish you could put on a costume and get powers?
Costume Quest 2 lets you do this and save Halloween!
Who developed Costume Quest 2?
Double Fine! You may know them for Psychonauts 1 & 2. They are based out of San Francisco.
Intro to Costume Quest 2:
So I’ve never played the first game but honestly, I don’t feel like I missed much. You have two siblings and two friends who jump through a portal after their previous adventure. I chose to play as the brother because the sibling love in me said to sacrifice him not knowing I was choosing who I was playing as for the rest of the game. But if I was honest, I would have chosen to play the sister for her superior costume choice of pirate.
We enter our neighborhood and our friends separate to check in on their families. My sister and I checked in on mom and dad and they were acting like we weren’t gone for several hours. Time travel, man. The local dentist is acting sketchy as heck though so we follow him and suddenly he has a talisman, a time traveler, and monsters coming out of a portal helping him take over the world! Why would the dentist destroy Halloween? Kids + candy = evil, of course! So I grab my sister and we time travel forward in time by ~20 years. Our friends are married which is awesome but the dentist has successfully taken over the world and implemented a dictatorship regime. So we go into their backyard and meet Corvus, our battle tutorial NPC.
The battles are super cool because you transform your Halloween costume and have attacks/abilities based on your costume. For example, one of your first costumes is the superhero who can punch enemies but as a special ability throw a bus at enemies. I love this idea. After teaching us how to fight we are sent into the past, lest the guards catch us. There we meet this kid dressed as a clown. He helps us find witches after some side quests we had to do (like finding a new pterodactyl costume). There is a fantastic reference to the song “Devil went down to Georgia” here because you challenge this kid dressed as a devil to a song off and you beat him by playing the clown horn. 10/10 I love this section.
We get to the witches in the swamp, and the dentist shows up with his pet time traveler who owes him a favor. The dentist makes off with the talisman after freezing the witches and leaves us to defeat his time traveler. We do but it didn’t help the future, and now our friends have been kidnapped. We get caught and sent to dentist school where we *definitely* learned about how bad candy is and how heinous costumes are and *definitely* didn’t sneak out, find our friends’ daughter, get a new Thomas Jefferson costume, and beat the principal in a battle. After that, we did some candy deliveries for a bunch of speakeasies so we could access more of the city and picked up a wizard and Cleopatra costume.
Finally, we can access the dentist compound. After beating up a bunch of bad guys and getting a ghost costume, we rescue our friends. We also rematched the time traveler and won. After all that, it’s time to face the dentist. Unfortunately, he is in the one building that requires his retina scan. So we go to the past, grab his younger self–who is not allowed to have candy or dress up on Halloween–come to the future.
We grab a robot costume to sneak past some scientists and a hot dog costume and have our final battle with the dentist in his mega suit. We return home, the timeline is back to normal. Mom and dad are still not concerned about how long we’ve been gone, there’s a festival, and the dentist is chill about kids eating candy and dressing up because it’s good for his business. We see characters from our journey, our friends go on their first date, and the game ends.
